About W&DSC

The Wareham & District Swimming Club was originally formed as an all male club, however in 1957 the club was reformed and females were allowed to become members.

The club is based at the Purbeck Sports Centre in Wareham and utilises the pool at Stanley Barracks, Bovington for training.

The club exists to promote and improve swimming from ages 8 through to masters/adults.

The competitive extension of the club is to provide competitive coaching for swimmers when they are ready as they progress from pre-development to squad level.

We hold a Colour Gala during the year, where swimmers are put into Colour Groups according to their swimming ability:

Blue – Purple – Orange – Red – Bronze – Silver – Gold – Platinum – Elite – Super Elite.

We also hold “Splash Nights” which are competitions of 25 & 50 metres.

At the end of the year, our Club Championships take place, this is where the swimmers swim 25m, 50m, 100m and 200m in all strokes, 400m Freestyle and individual Medley according to their age group, and receive medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places and ribbons for 4th, 5th and 6th place for the races they enter.

We also have Club Championship long distance races of 800m and 1500m races.

There are many trophies, plus Senior, Intermediate and Junior Age Group cups to be won which are all presented at our Annual Presentation Evening in January. All competitors receive an attendance certificate. It is an opportunity to gain times which could gain you a place in the County Championships in the coming year.

Annual General Meeting

The Swimming Club year runs from 1st April to 31st March and we hold our Annual General Meeting in the month of June. This is when the Committee is elected and any comments and questions from parents and swimmers are welcome.

Procedure for New Swimmers and Movement of Swimmers

We have 3 Terms in the year, September – December, January – April and May - August.

Assessment of New swimmers takes place within the first month of each term. (Usually September is the busiest).

New swimmers to be registered to Swim England once confirmation has been advised that they have paid their Membership Fee (to be paid within 3 weeks from the starting date). Swim England allows insurance cover for the swimmers first 3 weeks.

Movement of swimmers from Teaching to Competitive training to Pre-Development, Pre-Development to Development, Development to Squad termly.

Session Acceptance forms must be given to parents by Head Teacher or Head Coach once the criteria (Please see Website and Handbook) to move has been met and the Head Teacher or Head Coach feels they are ready. This advises parents of the Group they will be moving to, Session Days, Times and how many hours they may swim. The price given for this session to be accepted by the parent/carer by returning the form duly signed and agreeing to arrange an increase to their standing order 1 month from the date of the swimmer joining the sessions.

Swimmers must not attend the new session until the form has been returned duly signed. (This then gives the swimmer and parent/carer a months trial to ensure the sessions are suitable).

All swimmers membership moving from Pre-Development to Development Squad must be upgraded to Swim England Club Compete and pay the upgrade cost.

To be upgraded when payment has been confirmed.

Club Membership is reduced to Half Yearly if the swimmer joins after 30th June.

Swim England Membership does not change but continues up to 30th September of that year. Then only a percentage is required which will be advised by the Swim England renewals Dept. (Reviewed Annually)

Any new swimmers coming from another club during the year should have had their Membership paid for by their previous club, but will be    registered by W&DSC as being ranked to W&DSC. This will then allow all their licensed times on Swim England rankings to be listed under W&DSC.   Resignation forms to be completed to ensure all future results and information go to their present club W&DSC.

Helpers Welcome

If you are a mum or dad or any member of the swimmer’s family and feel you would like to take a more active part in the swimming club, we are always looking for extra helpers, especially on the Poolside on Gala nights. It’s good fun. Please let us know, and I am sure you will not regret it.

Many of our Teachers started being the ones watching on until they began to help and realised it’s much more enjoyable on the Poolside. We pay half the fees for all our Teachers aiming for qualifications that have shown commitment to the Club and encourage as many parents and friends to join us. As you all know in any job the administration seems to get more and more, this is the same for the club.

If any one can spare even a small amount of time to help (i.e. filing application forms, sorting badges 3 times a year for the next Test date, or coming on poolside to take the register at swimming sessions) it all helps and we would be very grateful.
