Alex Peaty had his most successful ever Dorset's, narrowly missing medals but finaling in all strokes, in seemingly every event he entered! The record holder for most Finals with 9 of them! Highlight: 5th in the 100m Fly, a new PB and club record of 1:04.95!
Angus' time at the Dorset's was fleeting but he made the most of his opportunity, taking home a PB + 23rd place finish in the 50m Free - 28.65!
Aris had a storming first Dorset's learning all the time and thoroughly soaking up the experience. He made 3x Finals - taking 4th in the 50m Free in 33.82!! A young man to watch moving forwards!
Austin had a strong Champs, full of PB's across all events, showing a great ability to step up in Finals, exceeding his heat swim times and gaining places. 2x Finals in the 50m and 100m Brst. Highlight: 5th place in 200m Brst, a big 7.5 second PB of 3:07.55!
Callum Mcdermott was focusing on his Breaststroke primarily through the Champs, showing good swims in the 50m and 100m events. 9th in the 50m, just missing Final but stepping up to 5th in the 100m Final with a 1:18.01!
Callum Way, similarly to Mcdermott, was mostly in Breaststroke events. Unfortunately getting DSQ'd in the 200m but had a top 3 seed time after his exceptional Club Champs 200m Brst swim of 2:49.68. He did take 9th in the 100m though, just missing Finals.
Ethan found his groove later into the Champs with a Final in the 100m Bk - finishing 7th in 1:11.30 and a strong 11th in the 100m Free with a 1:02.38 - 2 second PB!
Evie smashed her maiden competition as Junior Club Captain, making 2x Finals - 50m Free 33.01, an awesome PB, finishing 7th AND 50m Bk - 39.28 also a PB and also 7th! Always someone to give her all in competition and in training, only good things await for Evie!!
Ella looked better than ever in the 50m Free, taking home a PB of 32.23. Her 100m Free and 100m Bk started very promisingly, both with excellent first 50m splits but just faded in the last 35m. Simple fitness work and the 100's will follow the 50m form!
Fin was undoubtedly one of the heroes of the Champs, taking Wareham's only Gold(!) in the 50m Free in a time of 26.02. He made 6x Finals, claiming medals in 5 of them, taking his medal haul to 6 total. Bronze in 100m IM, Silver in 50m Bk, 100m Bk, 200m Bk and 100m Free. His 50m Bk time put him Top #40 in Britain... The 50m Bk, 100m Bk and 50m Free all earned Fin a place on the Junior podium, taking Junior Bronze for all 3 events! Fantastic Champs, well done Fin!!
Gabby was once again, a standout performer, demonstrating tremendous versatility and the effects of consistent hard training. She equalled Alex's 9x Finals record! With the highlight being a powerful 50m Fly, taking Silver in 30.95! Bronze in the 100m Brst and Finals in all strokes, including the 100m IM, great work Gabby!
Harley was, perhaps by his own admission, not at his end of 2019 Welsh National best! But... nonetheless, he represented himself well, making 6x Finals - the Highlight being a Bronze in the 50m Fly in a 32, 1.5 seconds off his best. It definitely has to beg the question: Where would he finish on top form...? He was also the only Wareham swimmer to enter the long distance 800m + 1500m Free events, earning top 6 finishes in both! Great swims for aerobic capacity which helps even sprinters! Take note everyone!
Hester certainly knows how to turn it on when it matters and she did not disappoint this time either. Her first comp as Senior Club Captain, leading by example she swam 5x Finals, claiming medals in all of them. Bronze in the 50m Free, 100m Free and 50m Bk. Silver in 50m + 100m Fly. Her 50m Fly performance narrowly missed Gold by 2 hundredths of a second in 29.59... A phenomenal display of athleticism to close down a body length deficit over the final length; maybe give her a little less of a lead next time... That swim put her on the Senior podium, taking Bronze AND ranking her Top #40 in Britain... Outstanding achievements, great work Hester!
Holly raised her level for the entire Champs, back to her very best in the Breaststroke 50m and 100m, taking 4th in both Finals. The Final of the 50m having 1st and 4th finish within 0.5 of each other so Holly's 4th could have just as easily been a medal. 3x Finals overall, with a big PB in the 50m Free too, showing her all round Sprint capability - 30.44.
(Issy) It is no secret that Issy has been struggling for a long time now with back injury. She swam bravely, as she always does, but it clearly was affecting her, making the PB in the 50m Fly even more impressive and certainly being the highlight of the Champs for her! We all wish her the very best in her recovery.
Jacy built into the Championships, getting stronger as it went on, taking 2x Finals in her favoured Breaststroke events. 5th in the 100m and 6th in the 50m. The Highlight being a brilliant swim at the end of the Champs in the 200m Brst, taking 4th place in a 4.5 second PB of 3:04.49! Demonstrating her ability as a real Breaststroke technician.
Jagoda benefited from an excellent learning experience at her first Dorset’s, not having her best swim in the 100m Brst but taking everything on-board to be better prepared for next time!
Kaitlyn has had a breakthrough 2019, showing glimmers of the huge potential she possesses. Her swims at the Champs were slightly off her best but no less promising with a great 2020 waiting ahead for her!
Kieran showed up for his 50m Free, the first event as Junior Club Captain, fired up and ready to go! It definitely showed in the water as he rocketed to a 1.3 second PB of 33.56! Placing 13th in a tightly packed age group. A brilliant leader, keep showing the way with hard work and positivity Kieran!
Lexie was without doubt the breakthrough star of the meet, smashing her way into 9x Finals, equalling Alex and Gabby's record! She took 5x medals across all strokes, an amazing feat and extremely encouraging for her future! Bronze in the 200m Brst and Silver in the 50m Fly, 100m Bk, 50m Bk and 50m Free. Her best performance in my opinion being the 50m Free, dropping from a mid 35 to a 33.45 - crazy 2 seconds on a 50m! Great swimming Lexie!!
Lily showed huge promise in her 3 events, starting to swim with far more composure and clarity of thought. 50m Fly - an excellent PB of 35.56, 100m IM - Just off PB but definitely the highlight has to be the 100m Fly - 1:20.86, a new PB and only just missing out on the Final in 10th! With focus on some key technical elements and strength building, Lily will be able to fuse her fantastic Fly rhythm and mobility with newfound power and hold of the water. I'm excited to see what lies ahead!!
Matt, while always pretty hard on himself, did have a brilliant overall Dorset's! Demonstrating the significant improvements he's made over the past 12 months. He made 5x Finals, narrowly missing the 50m Free with a strong PB of 27.61 placing 9th! Matt's best swim for me was the 50m Fly, a new PB of 29.85 and a 7th place finish. His 50m Brst was only a couple of tenths off his best, earning him 5th in the Final with a 34.46. Brilliant across all strokes, good work Matt!!
Millie wasn't quite on top form through the Champs in her 3 events but no matter what, she always conducts herself like a pro throughout the meet. An excellent work ethic and someone I never doubt will give her absolute all to every swim, there's no question Millie will be back stronger than ever!
Ollie has had a brilliant 12 months, achieving times for level 2 competitions and really learning his way around the open meet scene, as well as representing Wareham in Arena League. He had the 50m Free here at Dorset's, finishing 20th, missing a PB by just 2 tenths. With a few simple adjustments Ollie will surely shatter his time soon. Immense potential and certainly an athlete to watch for 2020.
Ruby had a great display overall at Dorset's, not necessarily in her typical events, although the 50m Free was a good PB of 31.30! Ruby's Fly has been going from strength to strength recently and this was displayed in her 50m, going a 34.64 - a new PB and possibly new Stroke #1? Keep working on it Ruby!
Sam, in his maiden outing as Senior Club Captain, led from the front, nailing his 3 swims with PB's in the 50m Free (28.04), and 50m Fly (30.04), just missing those big 27 and 29 milestones but should take lots of confidence away that those are right on the horizon!
Sophie Fielding well and truly made the most of her opportunity at Dorset's in her 1 event - 50m Free. Using all that extra nervous energy and adrenaline, she propelled herself to a massive 1.6 second PB, breaking 33 with a 32.98! 19th in Dorset and granting her qualification to future level 1 meets!
Will - a special mention to him as unfortunately he broke his ankle just before the Champs began. Even with his supernatural powers of recovery he couldn't quite get ready in time but I have every faith in Will to come back strong for the rest of 2020 and smash some new PB's!
Tanya has had a tumultuous start to her 2019/20 season I think it's fair to say. After a record breaking 2018/19 with scintillatingly fast 50m and 100m Brst PB's being set, earning Regional Silver and a place in the British Final! Not to mention a Dorset Senior Title! Oh and the fastest 50m Free ever swam by a Wareham female in 27.66. She has not quite been on that magical form just yet. It is unheard of for Tanya to not pick up medals at Dorsets but they eluded her in this campaign, taking 3x 4th place finishes in the 50m and 100m Brst and - Her best swim of the Champs a 4th and new PB in the 100m IM - 1:12.25. 5x Finals total and a solid top 16 in the 50m Bk!!
I really hope I can help Tanya to rediscover that rare form that has taken her to within touching distance of European Junior Champs qualification. Both selfishly - to enjoy watching such a phenomenal talent be exercised, but most of all for herself; to experience the visceral thrill and joy of taking the body to 100% performance and witnessing just how far that can take her in this sport.
Once again I'm incredibly proud of just how far we've all come as a Club over the past 5-6 years and I don't think we're done yet.
I'll leave everyone with a resonant quote from the great philosopher Socrates:
"No man/woman has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man/woman to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his/her body is capable."
